AU description: On the surface Byakuya appears to be cold and apathetic. He rarely smiles, never jokes, and is not known for having fun. He is an intelligent man, with a degree in criminal justice and a minor in history. He is a strategic thinker, a man who would have been well-suited to leading a military if such a job was open to him in Bela. He thinks of how to use a situation and how to best fight against his opponents, a skill that is very useful in his career as a police officer.

Byakuya hails from a rich, aristocratic foreign family. His parents gave him and his younger sister the best of everything: education, food, clothes, every luxury one can think of. He was raised to be outwardly respectful to people, and he is, but his upbringing is also responsible for his detached, serious nature. He tends to view certain actions as simply not befitting of someone of his upbringing and social class. He also tends to look down his nose at others, and although he keeps this mostly to himself, he insists on being referred to at all times by almost everyone as Mr. Kuchiki, or, preferably, Lt. Kuchiki.

Byakuya, however, is not as simple a man as he appears. Despite his callous and uncaring nature, he will protect those dear to him with his life. He has an overarching sense of justice, although the lines grow grayer for him in the details. He is willing to do somewhat shady actions for a just goal.

The best example of this is his work as a police lieutenant (a job that he's rather good at). Byakuya is currently under the secret employ of Xemnas, the Organization Superior and leader of the Loyalists. He secretly loathes the man and his gang, but he wishes to decrease gang activity and weaken the Organization. To achieve this goal, he is playing the role of a crooked cop who enjoys getting Xemnas' money on the side. This way, he can aide the Loyalists in destroying the more rebellious party of the Organization, and then wipe out the remaining members himself. In keeping with his lack of moral certainty in such areas, he frequently wonders if he is doing the right thing.

Byakuya fails to see the fun in life, and doesn't think of the world as a place built for entertainment.. According to him, the world is there for you to serve your purpose and to serve the greater justice; then you die. Whether you enjoy yourself or not is irrelevant. To prove this point to a friend, a younger Byakuya once devised a game completely devoid of amusement or fun.

Byakuya is around six feet tall, a thin man, yet certainly not devoid of muscle, although his clothing usually hides the extent of his muscle. He has blue eyes and long, straight black hair. His skin is fair and he's always well-groomed and cleanly shaved. The only arguable flaw in his features is the frown always on his face.

Byakuya is a physically strong man, trained as a black belt in karate during his youth and adolescence. He works out and trains his body when he has free time, intent on keeping his physical skills at their best. Being a cop, he is also proficient with guns, although he doesn't entirely enjoy the weapons. He has always had a soft spot for swords, and carries one around when he can. It's a useful defense mechanism (people tend to not bother the freak with the katana around his waist) and he is rather skilled at wielding it. Sometimes he even wears it when on duty. Despite this, he prefers not to fight. This is where his pride comes in again: fighting at every given opportunity is simply brutish, and there are men who are just not good enough to get beaten by a Kuchiki.

Byakuya has a soft spot for flowers, especially cherry blossoms, although they rarely grow in Bela. He also has a very large penchant for fine clothes. He has most of his outfits imported. He wears basic colors, mostly whites and blacks. He has no outfits that would qualify as casual. Along with his katana, he has two signature pieces of clothing: a pair of hair clips, one of which is clipped onto a tuft of hair combed diagonally across his forehead, and another on the right side of his head. These clips symbolize the wealth and rank of his family in his homeland. His other signature piece of clothing is a beautiful white scarf woven of the finest silk, a scarf that one will frequently see wrapped around his neck.
